Greatest Two Minutes in Sports Media?

Jimbo Fisher’s press conference this morning rivaled that of John Calipari at UK Media Day back in 2017 (Photo Credit

Even in my short time as a media member, I’ve sat through a ton of boring press conferences. In fact, I’d be willing to say that ninety-eight percent of what comes out of coaches’ and players’ mouths these days isn’t worth regurgitating. Most of it is banal rhetoric and bland cliché.

That’s why Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher’s latest shots back at his counterpart at Alabama, Nick Saban, were like music to media ears. Finally, something worthwhile to report, as Fisher didn’t hold back. Tell us, Jimbo, what you really think. Seldom do we hear any ‘professionals’ go off on their peers as Fisher did on Saban.

By now you’ve probably heard many of Fisher’s remarks. He made them at a presser this morning addressing Saban’s implication that A&M had essentially bought all their players through shady NIL deals. In his opening rant, Fisher calls Saban a narcissist and uses the word “despicable” numerous times to describe his coaching rival.

In addition, Fisher makes dismissive references to Saban as the Czar of football, as someone who thinks he’s God, and as someone who pouts and throws a fit when he doesn’t get his way.

We all look for mentors in our particular fields. I think what Jimbo said about Saban’s mentorship at the end of the second question may be the most validating thing he uttered during his entire discourse.

“You coach with people like Bobby Bowden and learn how to do things. You coach with other people and learn NOT how to do things.

How true that is. Thanks, Jimbo, for bringing a smile to everybody’s face this morning.

It’s close, but Jimbo’s remarks may rival the greatest UK media moment of all time.
