The Battle of the Bluegrass saga continued today with a men’s tennis matchup.
For the 27th straight time, Kentucky beat Louisville. The win streak extends back to the 1982-3 season. This win was made even sweeter as the Cats swept the Cards and moved to 3-0 on the season.
The No. 11 Wildcats began the day by winning the doubles. The pairings of JJ Mercer and Joshua Lapadat and Francois Musitelli and Yasha Zemel won their matches 6-1 and 6-4 respectively. Liam Draxl and Millen Hurrion’s match was left unfinished.
The doubles win gave the Wildcats the first point of the required four to win.
Francois Musitelli, the nation’s number No. 45 singles player, was the first Wildcat to win his singles matchup. Musitelli won his first set 6-2 but was given a challenge in the second. The second set was tied at 6, but Musitelli was able to push ahead and won the match 7-6. Musitelli’s back-to-back matches gave UK its second point.
Liam Draxl, the reigning NCAA Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player of the Year, lost the first set 6-0 to go down a set. Draxl responded by winning the second set 6-3 and the third 6-2. Draxl’s comeback gave Kentucky their third point.
The fourth and final point of Kentucky’s sweep was won by captain Millen Hurrion. Hurrion took the first set 6-4, but fell 2-6 in the second. The captain flipped the script and won his third and final set 6-2 to give the Cats their game-winning point.
Kentucky’s next match will be against Northern Kentucky. The Wildcats will travel to the Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills for the match.
